Inspiring Online: Delivering a Dynamic Virtual Keynote

Dan Thurmon

The Oracle Applications & Technology Users Group (OATUG) is a community of “people powering progress.” The OATUG provides a global community where thousands of Oracle applications and technology users connect with and learn from each other as well as from experts, solution providers, and Oracle product development teams. The founding client of Meeting Expectations, OATUG has trusted us to provide association management and event planning services for more than 25 years.

As the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world In the spring of 2020, the OATUG made the difficult decision to cancel its annual in-person conference, and to quickly “lift and shift” many of the planned breakout sessions to a virtual conference – OATUG Forum – scheduled to start the same time as the original event. We challenged ourselves to make the online event as valuable as a replacement for the in-person experience as possible…including the delivery of an impactful keynote session.

#ProblemSolved

Meeting Expectations already had a great working relationship with a professional speaker whose message was fitting for the circumstances surrounding pandemic lockdown. We connected with author, entrepreneur and Hall of Fame speaker Dan Thurmon, who embraced the challenge to adapt his talk “Off Balance, On Purpose” for online delivery.

Dan’s live session involves acrobatics, juggling (with knives!) and a six-foot unicycle, so the transition needed to capture so much more than a talking head on a webcam. While Dan was busy working with his production crew to create an unforgettable virtual keynote, Meeting Expectations ran multiple tests with our webinar technologies to ensure flawless execution of the dynamic production, culminating in a proof-of-concept dry run with Dan and team the day before the keynote.

When the time came, we started the webinar, provided a “voice of god” introduction and went live to Dan in his studio for a truly memorable session unlike any other.

“He was amazing! Energetic, informative, and most of all he spoke to the changes in work due to the pandemic.”

Exceeding Expectations

Among OATUG Forum’s 212 breakout, general and networking sessions, the keynote was the #1 most-attended live session over the two-week virtual conference. It was so popular that audience demand resulted in a special replay of the session during week two.  Got a virtual meeting problem to solve? We can help.
